Tips to Taking Pictures of a Baby
We’ve all seen adults dancing around making funny noises and faces trying to get a baby to give a smile for the camera. How many times can you say “C’mon baby, say cheeeeese!”. Some babies love hamming it up behind the lens, but lets face it, there are many that just don’t like it.

Here’s some suggestions that may help you get a quick grin from your baby.
- Make sure your baby is rested , fed and changed. If you want them to respond to your funny faces with funny faces, they need to feel good and alert.
- Make sure there aren’t any other distractions in the room. If the TV is on, turn it off. If your computer is on, shut it down.
- Turn off your flash. Sometimes that split second when the little red light is flashing on the front of your camera is enough to change the expression on your baby’s face.
- Hold the camera away from your face. With digital cameras you don’t always need to be looking through the view finder on your camera. Hold the camera just far enough away so that baby can see your face, but you still have a clear shot even if you have to crop it later.
With this in mind, now do what you know will make your baby smile. If it means dancing and jumping … do it. Peek-a-boo is another well known tactic that usually gets a grin. Find a colorful toy and hide it and show it.

You can use these tips and apply it to taking photos of animals too. Even though they don’t smile, you do want them looking at the camera with that same adoring look they give you all the time. Some animals even like playing with the camera. Check out this cute newborn pawing at the lens.
